Title : English Language Teaching Background in Bangladesh

Abstract : The study examines prevailing classroom language teaching situation in Bangladesh in relation to the materials produced centrally by the National Curriculum and Textbook Board, Bangladesh, following Communicative Language Teaching principles. As a prelude it discusses theoretical reinforcements of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) and considers its classroom procedures. It also explores the major characteristics of communicative materials and evaluates communicative characteristics of the present textbook. The methods adopted for this research are teachers' questionnaire survey and interview, students' questionnaire survey and interview, and opinions of the language experts. Finally on the basis of the quantitative survey findings, a list of suggestions for improvement of English language teaching has been developed.
