Title : "Virtues and Emotion: Aristotle's vs. Islamic View"

Authors : Md. Munir Hossain Talukder

Abstract : Discussion on virtue is as old as the origin of philosophy. What is virtue? Is there any relation between virtue and emotion? Are they conflicting or complementary? Can emotions play any role in a virtuous life? Philosophers throughout the times devoted themselves to providing guidelines for a meaningful life. They emphasized knowledge, reality (or spirituality) and morality to fulfill life's goals. Greek philosophers also concentrated on soul, knowledge and virtue for a worthwhile life. However, they significantly differ about the importance of emotion in developing virtuous character traits. In the Islamic view, virtue and virtuous life is greatly emphasized. There is a significant role of emotion in Islamic virtue ethics. This paper compares Aristotle's and Islamic view regarding virtue and virtuous life. It outlines the nature of Islamic virtue ethics in the light of the Holy Qur'an and the Hadith of the Prophet (saw). Considering emotion as an essential part of the human's virtuous actions, this paper examines Aristotle's virtue ethics at the end.
