Abstract : This paper presents the findings of a study conducted to identify the “black spots” (i.e. the most dangerous and high-risk locations) of the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway (National Highway #2, i.e. N2) of Bangladesh, which is the primary route between the capital Dhaka and Sylhet. N2 is considered one of the deadliest highways in Asia. The first 100 km of N2 (from South to North) was evaluated in this study. Detail crash data stored at the Accident Research Institute (ARI) of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) was retrieved and analyzed using the MAAP5 software. The black spot identification process was finalized based on road crash number, crash rate, critical value, crash severity and crash frequency. To find out the crash injury rates, the annual average daily traffic (AADT) of different years and the traffic growth rates were used. After five successive screenings, 8 locations were finally identified as black spots. Data and results are further analyzed, sites were visited and recommendations for countermeasures have been provided for enhancing road safety at the identified black spots.
