Authors : Md. Shoaib Chowdhury, Md. Owalid Hossain

Abstract : Dhaka is an overpopulated city that faces serious transportation problems. Although the city is bounded by rivers, the transportation systems in Dhaka are predominately road based. Recently a water taxi service with several routes has been launched at Hatirjheel Lake which is the city’s largest water reservoir locating at the city center. As the lake connects many important residential and business/commercial areas including offices, there is a huge demand for a water taxi service. The area is also served by buses (Hatirjheel Paribahan). However, the existing bus service is inadequate to fulfill the current demand particularly during the peak hours. Thus, some passengers are diverted to water-taxi as an alternative mode. This study examines the existing service quality of Hatirjheel water taxi and provides recommendations for further developments based on field observations and passenger survey data.
