Title : FDI and Social Development in Bangladesh: Case of the Telecommunications Sector

Abstract : Over the last few decades, Bangladesh has experienced rapid economic growth and social development. Compared to the other emerging economies in Asia, FDI inflows in South Asia are far below than anticipated and Bangladesh is no exception. However, the impact of FDI in telecommunications sector has been instrumental in the country’s economic growth and development. A lot of literature investigated the positive impacts of FDI on the country’s economic growth; however, FDI’s impact on social development remains unexplored. This paper investigates the impact of telecom sector’s FDI on the social development of Bangladesh. The objective of the research is to investigate the extent to which FDI in telecom sector led to social development in Bangladesh through improvements in human resource development and CSR activities. To investigate the research questions a case study approach is pursued. The first phase of data collection consists of structured interviews with multinational Telecom officials in Bangladesh. The aim of the interview is to gather information on how telecom industry is contributing towards social development of the country. It is expected that investment in the telecom sector leads to social development in terms of better human resources, higher standards of labor law and increased CSR initiatives.
