Title : “Economic Growth Nexus Energy Consumption: A Dynamic Cointegration and Causality Analysis

Authors : Md. Sharif Hossain

Abstract : This paper empirically examines the dynamic causal relationships between energy consumption and economic growth using time series data from 1972 to 2010 of Bangladesh. The empirical investigation of the causality relationships between energy consumption and economic growth involves three steps. At the first step, using the standard ADF and PP tests it is found that the variables economic growth and energy consumption are integrated of order 1. At the second step using bounds test approach and Johansen and Juselius’s test it is found that both the variables are co integrated. At the final stage, using VEC model, unidirectional causality is found from economic growth to energy consumption and the long-run relationship between economic growth and energy consumption is statistically significant. The CUSUM and CUSUMSQ tests results support that all the coefficients in the error correction model are stable.
