Impact statement: This research contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by designing and evaluating a capability-based digital journaling tool that supports newcomers during critical life transitions. By fostering structured reflection, emotional awareness, and proactive planning, the Life Transition Journal (LTJ) promotes SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) through enhanced mental well-being and adaptive coping during periods of uncertainty. The tool also advances SDG 4 (Quality Education) by strengthening self-regulated learning, goal-setting, and organizational skills that are essential for academic success and long-term personal development. Furthermore, by supporting recently arrived international students in navigating unfamiliar cultural, social, and institutional environments, this work aligns with SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) by addressing transitional vulnerabilities and promoting equitable integration experiences. Through its capability-based design, the research emphasizes expanding individuals’ real opportunities to act, reflect, and initiate meaningful change in their own lives.
