Impact statement: This nationwide cross-sectional study of 911 relapse cases in Bangladesh reveals the devastating legal and social toll of substance use, particularly among young men. The research highlights that nearly half of substance users (49.5%) face arrest, with over 52% experiencing imprisonment. Socially, the impact is equally severe, with 71.4% facing social stigma, 60% being bullied, and 70% suffering from destroyed family relationships. These findings serve as a critical evidence base for policymakers, indicating that while legal enforcement is active, there is an urgent need for multi-dimensional treatment, social intervention, and family support systems to overcome the cycle of addiction and improve the quality of life for individuals in Bangladesh.
