Impact statement: This article examines whether Singapore should introduce a sui generis database right similar to the European Union model. It is important because it analyzes the distinction between traditional copyright protection and the special protection claimed for commercial databases, and questions whether a separate database right is justified in the Singapore context. By evaluating the policy and legal implications of extending protection beyond ordinary copyright, the article contributes to debates on innovation, access to information, and balanced intellectual property regulation in the digital economy.
