Impact statement: This study reveals a critically low rate of oral cancer (OC) screening in Bangladesh, with only 2.4% of dental patients having ever undergone an examination despite high awareness levels. By utilizing a model comparison approach, the research identifies that former smokeless tobacco users, past smokers, and those with a family history of OC (which increases the odds of screening by up to 16 times) are significantly more likely to seek screening. These findings highlight a major "lost golden opportunity" for early detection in dental practices and provide a vital evidence-based mandate for the government to implement a national-level screening program and targeted educational initiatives to mitigate the high mortality associated with this disease.
