Impact statement: The article critically examines the hypocrisy and selectivity in how states and legal scholars approach serious international crimes such as aggression. It argues that many states have selectively highlighted war crimes and crimes against humanity in certain conflicts-such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine-while ignoring equally grave acts of aggression by powerful actors in other contexts, thereby illustrating inconsistency in legal and moral responses. By challenging the international legal academe to confront these inconsistencies rather than merely responding to prevailing narratives, the article contributes to deeper reflections on academic responsibility, fairness, and impartiality in global legal scholarship.
