Impact statement: This is the first study of its kind in Bangladesh to evaluate the demand for smoke-free housing in urban multiunit complexes. The research reveals a near-universal desire (94.8%) for smoke-free housing among residents, with the smoke-free building policy (44.9%) being the most preferred option. By identifying that factors such as staying at home for more than 12 hours, being a non-smoker, and having smoking family members significantly increase support for comprehensive bans, the study provides a critical evidence-based mandate for the government to include smoke-free provisions in the National Housing Policy and existing tobacco control laws to protect thousands of vulnerable urban dwellers.
