Impact statement: This cross-sectional study of 320 participants reveals that the COVID-19 pandemic in Bangladesh was not just a health crisis, but a significant socioeconomic catastrophe that deeply altered the cost of living. The research identifies that nearly half of consumers (48%) spent between 5,000 and 20,000 Taka on additional pandemic-related expenses, with the most noticeable cost increases occurring in protective gear (masks and sanitizers), transportation, and electronic devices. By demonstrating that 22% of respondents faced pay cuts and that chronic diseases like hypertension were significantly associated with older age groups during this period, the study provides a vital mandate for the government and stakeholders to judge public opinion and design financial safety nets and public health interventions for densely urbanized, lower-middle-income nations.
