| Impact statement: This case-control study of 240 students in Dhaka, Bangladesh, identifies critical environmental and lifestyle factors driving the rising prevalence of childhood obesity. The research reveals that children from families with a monthly income of over 50,000 Taka are three times more likely to be overweight. At the same time, a complete lack of physical activity increases the risk by a staggering 38 times. Additionally, consuming fast food regularly and spending more than four hours daily on sedentary activities (like video games) were found to be major risk factors. Conversely, having a normal-weight mother and limiting cake and biscuit consumption serve as protective factors. These findings highlight the "double burden of malnutrition" in urban Bangladesh and serve as a vital guide for public health professionals to implement awareness programs that target both dietary habits and physical activity to prevent a future epidemic of chronic diseases. | Collaboration: Partner University | Keywords: Bangladesh, children and adolescents, obesity, overweight, risk factors |
