Impact statement: This is the first-ever study to disclose the prevalence of postpartum depression (PPD) among facility-delivered mothers in urban Dhaka, revealing that nearly one in three women (29.9%) suffers from PPD symptomatology. The research identifies that lack of support from a husband is the most powerful predictor, increasing the likelihood of depression by over four times. Other significant risk factors include being a first-time mother, losing a job due to pregnancy, and maternal age over 30. Crucially, the study highlights that while higher income and lower sedentary hours act as protective factors, the overall high prevalence necessitates an urgent integration of mental health counseling into existing maternal health services to protect the long-term health and development of both mothers and their children.
