| Impact statement: This rapid review finds that although no specific monkeypox vaccine has been developed, the smallpox vaccine is up to 85% effective in preventing infection and provides long-term protection. The research highlights that third-generation vaccines (JYNNEOS/IMVAMUNE) are preferred over earlier generations due to significantly fewer side effects and are recommended for high-risk groups, including healthcare workers and laboratory professionals. By establishing that monkeypox is preventable through targeted vaccination in semi-endemic settings, the study provides a vital evidence-based mandate for governments to implement pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis while advocating for further human clinical trials to refine the safety and efficacy of current immunisation options. | Collaboration: NGO | Keywords: Monkeypox, Vaccine approach, Vaccine recommendations, Global health emergency |
