Impact statement: This study reveals a high prevalence of depression among mothers of school-going children in Dhaka, Bangladesh, with over 57% of participants exhibiting symptoms ranging from mild to severe. The research identifies that a child’s behavior—such as being unhappy or fearful, lying/cheating, or getting nervous in new situations—is significantly associated with increased maternal depression. Furthermore, children's lifestyle factors, specifically watching television for 3 or more hours and prolonged internet use, were found to be strong predictors of higher depression levels in mothers. These findings highlight maternal depression as an "alarming public health concern" in Bangladesh and provide a critical guideline for developing family-centered psychological interventions to support both maternal mental health and child development.
