Impact statement: This qualitative study examines a tragic 2015 ferry disaster in the Padma River that resulted in 79 deaths, including 14 children and 28 women. The research identifies that while locals began immediate rescue efforts, official emergency management was inadequate, with a rescue vessel taking 12 hours to reach the site. Highlighting overcrowding and a lack of vessel driving skills as primary factors, the findings serve as an urgent call for the enforcement of waterway rules and the creation of a national-level policy for mass rescue to prevent future manmade drowning disasters.
