Impact statement: This is the first study to investigate habit strength and physical activity (PA) regulation in a low- and lower-middle-income country (Bangladesh). The research identifies that while 58.4% of university students reduced their exercise levels after enrolling, moderate-intensity activity and strength training are significant predictors of long-term habit formation. By demonstrating that autonomous motivation—behaving out of interest and satisfaction—directly nurtures the development of habitual routines, the study provides a vital mandate for using habit-based interventions to protect the physical and cognitive health of young adults as they transition into adulthood.
